Department of Molecular Science and Technology
This Department undertakes advanced education and research in relation to production processes for chemical materials from a variety of perspectives, including the conservation of resources and energy. Research covers a wide range of fields, from micro to macro, from system design to process control, and from advanced materials to biotechnology. The Department takes on the challenges to next-generation production technologies, conducting research in the creation of human-friendly and environment-friendly systems and developing optimum designs and structural controls for clean production processes. Goods that are essential to our everyday lives are produced through reactions with a variety of chemical compounds, and there is always the possibility that these production processes will give rise to compounds that are harmful to humans or the environment. With the growing emphasis on the health of human beings and protection of the global environment, the development of human-friendly production processes that also demonstrate harmony with the natural environment has become an extremely critical issue for society. Chemical engineering is the academic field that takes on these issues. In the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, students learn “how to achieve human-friendly and environment-friendly production,” with a specific focus on chemical engineering. Chemical Engineering and Materials Science is a discipline that undertakes research in human-friendly and environment-friendly systems as part of chemical compounds production processes, with research themes that combine various advanced production technologies, including the optimum designs and process controls used in these production systems. Because many manufactured chemical compounds are related to advanced fields such as semiconductors and biotechnology, research covers a wide range of areas, from micro to macro, from system design to process control, and from advanced materials to biotechnology. The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science takes a comprehensive approach to these research themes, actively undertaking fundamental research as well as research targeting practical applications. The research places a particular emphasis on the establishment of systems for the transfer and conversion of materials and energy in production processes, methods for controlling reactions at the molecular and atomic level and detecting the chemical compounds, and designing processes for controlling biological reactions. One unique feature of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, however, is that it often takes on diverse issues faced by the front lines of production, aiming to increase its ability to resolve problems creatively. For this reason, we place great importance on fostering students in their creativity, their flexibility to respond to diverse issues, and their ability to resolve problems efficiently. The Department offers numerous experimental courses, so that students can acquire the ability to conduct research. Almost all students continue on to their desired careers after graduation, but one unique feature of this Department is that more than 30% of graduating students go on to graduate school to continue even more advanced research.
